6 months into our new home

Sorry for not updating sooner but our life got very busy just before moving in.
Well time flies and we cannot believe that we are already at 6 months.

We did our final inspections and signed off the paperwork to get our keys and whole bunch of smiles on the 25th of March 2014.

The feeling when you walk through the door is amazing and it makes the whole experience worth the wait. Needless to say we camped on the floor overnight to experience living in our beautiful new home for the first time !!
A great feeling.....

We have completed all of our landscaping, external lighting, added window furnishings and final personal touches and been through the three month inspection but are still sitting at six months with things still outstanding.

They are not major issues but we would like to see the end of trades people.... but we are in and very happy nonetheless.

For all those who are contemplating a new build.... do it !! ... don't wait. It seems an eternity in getting through the process and it feels like it goes on forever but in the end it actually goes surprisingly quickly.

The rewards are great and the feeling ....... simply amazing !

Good luck to all who make the journey; may you make your mark in the world with a house you can be proud of.

  1. Hi Murphy, thanks so much for your blog! My name is Carol and we are a family of 5 and about to start our PD process to build the fab Sandringham as well. Congrats on your build, it looks fantastic. I hope you don't mind me picking your brains. We too want to extend the kitchen into a dining room - should we separate that with a door? We will use the space you call a dining room as a craft room for now (we have 3 prolific little girls who like to paint and glue and draw!) also, did you find the alfresco also along the back works well? I was worried it might reduce the light to the back but would love your opinion on this. Thanks so much for your help. Can't wait to get to where you are now! Best wishes, Carol and Bernard

  2. Hi Carol and Bernard,

    No not at all.
Thanks for your comments and glad we are helping someone with their thoughts.
On your question of a door for the dining room (your craft room), we had thought of using a nice see through floor to ceiling partition to help divide the room but not anything permanent. We haven't done it yet.
We have a great aspect to the rear and enjoy the light and views, so for us it wouldn't work. We find the nib wall at the end of our kitchen works well to give the sense of a "next room". We are a bit about the space side of things so for us closing it up would not fit with our style of open plan living. We have noisy kids too but love the upstairs downstairs feel. For us it connects the living spaces. who needs an intercom ! ...... I hope that helps.
On the question of the alfresco, we have largely adopted the display home big windows, floor to ceiling and we have a south facing backyard. Plenty of light floods in, so it sort of depends on your orientation and how many windows/type you put in. With the full sliders and on a warm day it is fantastic to open up the spaces and have the area to spread out in. Love it !!

We did the cut out in the study/office wall but we do find that room to be a bit dark, even with the cut out. If you have solid walls you may find it a bit dark. Other than that it is perfect.

We wish you well... I'm sure it will be as good as you imagine it to be.
